Celebrate Banned Books Week

And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, a children's picture book based on the true story of two male Chinstrap Penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo who hatched and raised a healthy young chick from the egg of a mixed-sex penguin couple, tops the list of the most frequently challenged books for 2007, according to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. A total of 420 book challenges were reported throughout the United States during 2007, according to ALA. It is estimated that for each incident reported, four or five remain unreported.

This week (September 27-October 4) marks the 27th observance of Banned Books Week in the United States. The celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of the freedom to choose what one wishes to read. For further information about Banned Books Week and a list of the 10 most-challenged books for 2007, visit the Banned Books Week webpage.
