New York test results: great—but are they valid?

Kids in New York City and across the state posted jaw-dropping improvements on math and reading exams this year, prompting critics to question the validity of the tests.

The results of standardized state exams released Monday show average student scores improving in every tested grade in the city, from third to eighth, in math and reading. Average scores in some grades made astonishing double-digit leaps over last year.
