On November 2, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings announced the national distribution of 520,000 free, new books as part of the 2007 Adolescent Readers Initiative. The initiative, a joint venture between the Department of Education and the nonprofit entity First Book, is designed to improve the literacy skills of struggling young adults in low-income schools and communities.
