Toronto schools to open for summer to keep kids safe

More than 150 schools in troubled and poverty-stricken neighbourhoods across Toronto, Ontario, will open their doors this summer to keep kids busy—and safe. The provincial government is expected to announce June 6 that it will allocate $4 million for schools in neighborhoods like Lawrence Heights, Malvern, as well as Jane-Finch, where a student was shot and killed in his school. "Kids that aren't going to go off to summer camp or kids who don't have cottages to go to need to have a community place they can feel they're a part of," said Education Minister Kathleen Wynne. The proposal involves adding programs, like basketball camps and mentoring classes. Read more at TheStar.com.
