Public schools: Primary pillar of American democracy

"Even though the public school system is far from perfect, public education remains the primary pillar supporting American democracy," writes William L. Bainbridge in a recent issue of the Florida Times-Union. Noting that the roots of America's public schools can be traced back to Plato, Bainbridge maintains that public schools remain vital to democracy's goal of producing citizens "from all of society who are prepared to succeed as contributing adults."
