Program aims to help rebuild schools after an earthquake

After a natural disaster, relief efforts are often channeled into rebuilding schools. But “education is much more than buildings,” said Jorge Sequeira, director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Islamabad Office. UNESCO’s Earthquake Response Program targets groups ranging from schoolchildren to senior managers, training them in earthquake response, management of recovery and reconstruction, and by providing training materials including modules on psychosocial support. Activities include increasing the outreach of literacy programs and developing awareness at policy level of the importance of education.
