Dropout rate in India linked to mother's education level

Children in India whose mothers are uneducated are more likely to drop out of school, according to the Annual State of Education Report 2006, released January 5 by Deputy Chairperson of Planning Commission Montek Singh Aluwalia. The survey of more than 300,000 households covering 90% of the districts in the country found the dropout rate of children of uneducated mothers was about 10% compared with 2.5% of their educated counterparts. With regard to the relationship between a child’s learning ability and the mother’s education, the study found that 25% of children of unschooled mothers were unable to recognize alphabets compared with 12.8% of schooled mothers.
