Children in India whose mothers are uneducated are more likely to drop out of school, according to the Annual State of Education Report 2006, released January 5 by Deputy Chairperson of Planning Commission Montek Singh Aluwalia. The survey of more than 300,000 households covering 90% of the districts in the country found the dropout rate of children of uneducated mothers was about 10% compared with 2.5% of their educated counterparts. With regard to the relationship between a childs learning ability and the mothers education, the study found that 25% of children of unschooled mothers were unable to recognize alphabets compared with 12.8% of schooled mothers.
