Early education: Some progress; much work remains

Primary school enrollment worldwide increased between 1999 and 2004, according to UNESCO's Educational for All Global Monitoring Report 2007, which revolves around the theme of "Strong Foundations: Early Childhood Care and Education." Despite this progress, however, 77 million primary school-age children still are not enrolled in school.

The report, released October 26, addresses the importance of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and outlines nine areas in which urgent policy attention is needed. For further information, visit the UNESCO webpage for the report.
