South Africa: Too many pupils still can’t read

Despite efforts initiated in 2001 to raise reading levels in primary schools, a “shockingly high number” of South African school children are unable to read at the appropriate grade and age level. While new curriculum guidelines have allocated sufficient time for language instruction, including teaching children how to read, teachers need more and better training in effective reading instruction.
