Alphabet block for one in six English five-year-olds

After a year of primary school, 16% of children in England are unable to recognize all or most letters of the alphabet, and 15% are unable to write their own name. These are among the data revealed by the 2005 “foundation stage profile,” an assessment of language, literacy, and early math skills of children in school reception classes (ages four and five).
